Italy is a long peninsula shaped like a boot, reaching from the Alps into the Mediterranean Sea, plus the two large islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Rome, the capital, is about halfway down the western side. The biggest industrial cities, Milan and Turin, are in the north on the plain of the Po River. Naples is the largest city of the south. Venice sits on the Adriatic coast in the northeast, and Florence is in Tuscany, in the hills of central Italy.
