The physical geography of Utah

Three large regions meet in Utah. The Rocky Mountains enter the northeast as two ranges: the Wasatch Range, running north to south, and the Uinta Mountains, which run east to west and include Kings Peak, the highest point. The west is part of the Great Basin, with desert valleys, the Great Salt Lake and the Bonneville Salt Flats. The south and east are on the Colorado Plateau, where the Colorado and Green rivers have cut deep canyons into colorful rock.

Every Utah physical map on this page was rendered from NASA SRTM 30-meter elevation data, with hydrography from Natural Earth and the shoreline-clipped state outline from the US Census Bureau. Each map is colored over that state’s own elevation range, and the relief shading is exaggerated so gentle terrain still shows.
