Most of Eastern Europe is plain. The North European Plain runs across Poland, Belarus and Ukraine into Russia, where it is called the East European Plain. The Carpathian Mountains curve through Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania, and the Balkan Peninsula in the south is mountainous. The Danube, the region’s great river, flows east to the Black Sea. The Ural Mountains and the Caucasus mark the edge of Europe, and Mt. Elbrus in the Caucasus is the continent’s highest peak.
