The physical geography of Russia

Russia is the largest country in the world and spans two continents. West of the low Ural Mountains is the East European Plain, where most Russians live. East of the Urals lies Siberia: first the flat, marshy West Siberian Plain, then the Central Siberian Plateau, then mountain ranges that continue to the Pacific. The Caucasus Mountains on the southern border include Mt. Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe. Lake Baikal, in southern Siberia, is the deepest lake in the world, and the Kamchatka Peninsula in the far east has many active volcanoes.

  • Ob

The terrain is drawn from a global elevation model (Mapzen terrain tiles, built from NASA SRTM and other public surveys). Coastlines, rivers, lakes and feature names come from Natural Earth. The colors are spread over this country’s own elevation range, so its terrain shows clearly whether it is flat or mountainous.
