How to use the set

The sheets run from easiest to hardest. Each one needs scissors, a glue stick and about fifteen minutes.

  1. Step 1Cut firstCut out all the pieces before gluing anything. Keep them in a small pile or a cup so none get lost.
  2. Step 2Lay it outPut each piece where it goes without glue. Check it with the child, or with the answer key where the sheet has one.
  3. Step 3Glue downA glue stick works best: glue on the paper, not the piece, then press the piece down.
  4. Step 4Read it backOn the word and sentence sheets, the child reads each word or sentence aloud once it is glued down.

About these cut and paste worksheets

Cut and paste worksheets do two jobs at once. The cutting builds hand strength and control for writing, and the sorting or ordering is the real lesson: shapes, sounds, words, sentences, or the order things happened. Because the pieces can be moved before they are glued, a child can try an answer, look at it and change it, which a pencil worksheet does not allow.

Three sheets here are new: Sort the Shapes, Cut and Glue the Words and Build a Sentence, each with its answer key on page 2. The rest are free cut and paste sheets from elsewhere on the site, collected here: the sorting worksheets, the kindergarten and 1st grade monthly worksheets, word work Level 6, the rainforest layers page and the dinosaurs timeline for kids.

For scissor practice on its own, the tracing lines and cutting practice worksheets start with straight lines and work up to zigzags, waves and steps. More word work with cut and glue sheets is in the CVC word work packs, and more sight word sentences on the sight words page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age are cut and paste worksheets for?

From about age 3, once a child can use child-safe scissors with a grown-up nearby, up to second grade. The shape and picture sorts suit pre-K and kindergarten; the sentence, syllable, science and history sheets suit grades 1 and 2.

What do children learn from cut and paste activities?

Scissor control and hand strength, which help with handwriting, plus whatever the sheet is about: sorting, reading words, putting words in order to make a sentence, or putting events in order.

Glue stick or liquid glue?

A glue stick for small hands. Liquid glue soaks the paper and the small pieces slide. Put glue on the page, then press the piece on.

Do these worksheets have answer keys?

Sort the Shapes, Cut and Glue the Words and Build a Sentence have the answer key on page 2. On the others, check that each piece is in the right place.

How do I print them?

Each card downloads a PDF. Print on US Letter paper at 100 percent (actual size). Card stock makes the pieces easier to cut and handle.
