How to use the set

There are two sheets for each step, so the drawing stays easy while the writing grows.

  1. Step 1Talk firstRead the question at the top together. Ask what it could be. Silly answers are the best ones.
  2. Step 2Draw itThe child draws the answer in the empty space. There is no wrong picture.
  3. Step 3Step 1Trace the sentence, then write it again on the line below.
  4. Step 4Step 2Trace the start of the sentence and finish it with a word from the picture box.
  5. Step 5Step 3Write a whole sentence alone, then tick off capital letter, finger spaces and period.

About these draw and write worksheets

Many kindergartners freeze in front of an empty page. These sheets give them a reason to pick up the pencil: a picture that needs finishing. What is the dog dreaming about? What jumped out of the box? Every child has an answer, and drawing it comes before any writing.

The sentence comes second, and it grows in three steps. In Step 1 the whole sentence is there to trace and copy. In Step 2 the start is there to trace, and the child ends it with a word from a box of four pictures, or with a word of their own. In Step 3 the lines are empty and a short checklist reminds the child to use a capital letter, finger spaces and a period.

The pictures are line art, so they can be colored in when the writing is done. When a child can write a sentence alone, move on to the sentence writing worksheets for grades 1 and 2. For letter formation, see the handwriting and name tracing sheets.

More for writing: sentence writing worksheets (grades 1–2), topic sentence worksheets (grades 3–5), graphic organizers for planning, grammar worksheets, and the rest of the writing printables.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age are draw and write worksheets for?

Kindergarten, about ages 5 and 6. Step 1 suits the start of the year, when children are tracing and copying. Step 3 suits the end of the year and the start of first grade, when they write a sentence alone.

Why draw before writing?

Drawing gives a young child something to write about. A child who has just drawn a pizza on the dragon’s plate knows what the sentence will say. The picture is the plan for the writing.

What if my child cannot spell the word they want?

Let them write the sounds they hear. In Step 2 the picture box gives four words to copy, and a child who drew something else can sound out their own word.

Do these worksheets have answer keys?

No. Every drawing and every sentence is the child’s own, so there is nothing to mark right or wrong.
