About the CVC Worksheets

CVC words are three-letter words made of a consonant, a short vowel and a consonant: cat, pin, hot, bed, sun. They are the first words a child sounds out alone. These worksheets give that child a lot of them to read, in 9 different kinds of sheet, so the practice does not feel like the same page every day.

Every word a child has to read is a three-letter short vowel word or one of sixteen first sight words (the, a, is, on, in, has, to, and, I, his, it, at, not, see, can, no). The wrong answers are chosen to look like the right one: cat sits next to can and cap, so the child has to read to the last letter and cannot guess from the first.

The sheets climb in steps. A set starts with single words (Find the Word, Circle the Picture, Cut and Glue, Rhyme Jars), moves to whole sentences (Which Sentence?) and ends with tiny stories (Yes or No?, Read and Fill In). The review set adds Swap the Vowel, where one changed letter turns bug into bag.

The 6 short a sheets on this page are free to print, each with its answer key, and the same 6 kinds are free for every other short vowel on its phonics pages. All of the pictures are black and white line art, so a class set costs nothing extra to copy and the pictures can be colored in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CVC word?
A three-letter word spelled consonant, vowel, consonant, where the vowel makes its short sound: cat, pin, hot, bed, sun. Each letter makes one sound, so a child who knows letter sounds can blend the word.
What grade are these for?
Kindergarten and the start of 1st grade. They suit a child who knows the letter sounds and is starting to blend them into words.
What order should I use them in?
Short a first, then short i, short o, short e and short u, and the review set last. Inside a set, the single-word sheets come before the sentence and story sheets.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Each free PDF has its answer key as the second page. The pack has a key for every sheet, printed four to a page at the back.
Do they print in black and white?
Yes. Every worksheet is black and white line art. Only the cover of the pack is in color.
What comes after CVC words?
Reading them in books. The Level 1 decodable readers are short illustrated books written with the same three-letter words, and the sight word worksheets teach the common words that cannot be sounded out.
