African Capitals Quiz

54 capitals. We name a capital, you click its country on the map. Three tries each.

How to play

Press Start. The name of a capital city shows at the top of the map: click the country it belongs to. Right on the first try turns the country green; right after a miss turns it amber; after three misses it turns red and the quiz moves on. A wrong click shows the name of the country you clicked. To test just the capitals, point at a country to see its name, or tick Show country names to write the names on the map (zoom in for the small ones). A run with names shown says so on the result card and keeps its own best time. The smallest countries have a circle: click inside it. When you finish, practice just the capitals you missed, or learn the countries first in the Africa map quiz.

Questions

How many capitals are in this quiz?

54, one for each country the quiz asks.

Which African capitals do people get wrong?

The ones that are not the biggest city: Abuja (not Lagos) in Nigeria, Yamoussoukro (not Abidjan) in Côte d'Ivoire, Dodoma (not Dar es Salaam) in Tanzania, Rabat (not Casablanca) in Morocco and Porto-Novo (not Cotonou) in Benin. South Africa has three capitals: Pretoria (government), Cape Town (parliament) and Bloemfontein (courts); this quiz uses Pretoria.

Has any African capital changed recently?

Yes. Equatorial Guinea made Ciudad de la Paz, on the mainland, its capital in January 2026, in place of Malabo. Burundi moved its capital from Bujumbura to Gitega in 2019. Egypt is moving its government to a new city east of Cairo; Cairo is still listed here.

Why is Western Sahara grey?

Western Sahara is disputed and has no agreed capital, so this quiz leaves it out. It is asked in the Africa map quiz.

How is the score worked out?

Your score is the share of capitals you placed on the first try. A capital you place on the second or third try turns its country amber and does not count toward the score; after three misses the country turns red and the quiz moves on.

Can my class use this?

Yes, free, with no sign-up and no ads. At the end, students type their name and take a screenshot of the result card (map, score, time and date) to hand in.
