55 countries. We name one, you click it on the map. Three tries each.

How to play

Press Start. A country name shows at the top of the map: click it. Right on the first try turns it green; right after a miss turns it amber; after three misses it turns red and the quiz moves on. The smallest places have a circle around them: click inside it. Use the zoom buttons for crowded corners of the map.

Questions

How many countries are in this quiz?

55: the 54 UN member states in Africa plus Western Sahara. Somaliland is drawn as part of Somalia, as the UN does.

Why are some disputed places in the quiz?

The quiz asks where places are on the map, not whether every country recognises them. Western Sahara is on most classroom maps, so it is asked like any other place.

Is Côte d'Ivoire the same as Ivory Coast?

Yes. Côte d'Ivoire is the name the country uses in English too. Eswatini was called Swaziland until 2018, and Cabo Verde used to be Cape Verde.

Why are there two Congos?

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (capital Kinshasa) is the big one in the middle of Africa. The Republic of the Congo (capital Brazzaville) is its smaller neighbour to the west, across the Congo River.

How is the score worked out?

Your score is the share of places you found on the first try. A place you find on the second or third try turns amber and does not count toward the score; after three misses it turns red and the quiz moves on.

Can my class use this?

Yes, free, with no sign-up and no ads. At the end, students type their name and take a screenshot of the result card (map, score, time and date) to hand in.
