About these contractions worksheets

A contraction joins two words into one, with an apostrophe standing in for the letters left out: do not becomes don't. These worksheets cover contractions made with not, is, are, will and am.

The usual mistake is putting the apostrophe where the two words meet. It belongs where the letters were removed, which is why one worksheet asks children to choose between do'nt and don't.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grade are these contractions worksheets for?
Second and third grade.
Where does the apostrophe go in a contraction?
Where the letters were left out. In "do not", the o in not is dropped, so the apostrophe goes between the n and the t: don't.
What is the difference between its and it's?
It's is a contraction of "it is". Its with no apostrophe shows ownership, as in "the dog wagged its tail".
