Making a family tree with young children

Start with the labeled tree. The child draws their own face at the bottom, then Mom and Dad above, then both sets of grandparents at the top, and writes each name on the line (or a grown-up writes it). The tree shows that Mom and Dad each have parents of their own, which is the first idea of generations.

The blank family tree has the same frames with no labels, for children to write who each person is, and the My Family pages ask them to draw everyone and count how many people are in their family.

Reading about families

Read the free My Family book together first. Jade the red panda shows her mom, dad, big brother and grandparents, how they help each other at home and what they do together. Then ask children how they help at home and let them circle their own jobs on the I Help at Home sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the family tree template free?
Yes. The labeled family tree (Me, Mom, Dad and both sets of grandparents) and the blank-label family tree are free PDFs. Both print in black and white, and the tree can be colored.
Which page should I use for kindergarten?
The kindergarten My Family page: children draw their family, circle how many people are in it and circle who is in it from eight pictures. The grades 1-2 page asks for sentences.
What age is the family tree for?
Kindergarten to 2nd grade. Younger children draw the faces and a grown-up writes the names; second graders can write the names themselves.
