About the Frayer model

A Frayer model is a four-square vocabulary organizer. Students write a word in the center, then its definition, its characteristics, some examples, and some non-examples in the four boxes around it.

It is used for content vocabulary in every subject, from "mammal" in science to "democracy" in social studies to "quadrilateral" in math. Type the word before printing or leave the center blank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Definition, characteristics, examples, and non-examples. Some teachers swap characteristics for facts, or ask for a picture in one of the boxes.
Non-examples make students decide where a concept ends. Saying why a bat is not a bird, or why a circle is not a polygon, shows whether they really understand the word.
