About the 5 Ws chart

The 5 Ws are the questions a complete summary answers: who was involved, what happened, when and where it took place, and why. Many teachers add how as a sixth.

Students use the chart to summarize a news article, a chapter, or a historical event, or to plan their own writing. Each question has its own lined row on US Letter paper.
