Reading comprehension in kindergarten

A kindergartner who can sound out cat and sat is ready to read for meaning, as long as the text is short and there is something to do with it. Each of these sheets is one small story of three to five sentences, built from short-vowel words, the first sight words and color words, set in very large type.

The activity under the story is the comprehension check. To circle the right picture, color the frog green, number three pictures or draw what is in the box, the child has to have understood the words. There is almost no writing, so a child who reads better than they write is not held back.

The sheets are black and white line art, so they are cheap to copy and the pictures can be colored. If your child is still learning letter sounds, start with the kindergarten decodable books. When these feel easy, move on to the 1st grade passages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a kindergartner read these on their own?
Most can by the middle of the year. The stories use short-vowel words such as cat, sat and hid, the first sight words, and color words. Each story is three to five short sentences in very large type.
How are these different from the 1st grade passages?
They are one page, not three, and the child answers by circling, coloring, numbering or drawing, with almost no writing. The 1st grade passages are longer and have a separate question page.
Do they print in black and white?
Yes. Every sheet is black and white line art, so it costs nothing extra to copy and the child can color the pictures.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Page 2 of each PDF is the same sheet with the answers marked.
