Capitals people get wrong
Most mistakes come from guessing the best-known city. In these states the capital is somewhere else:
- New York: Albany, not New York City
- California: Sacramento, not Los Angeles
- Illinois: Springfield, not Chicago
- Florida: Tallahassee, not Miami
- Texas: Austin, not Houston
- Pennsylvania: Harrisburg, not Philadelphia
- Washington: Olympia, not Seattle
- Nevada: Carson City, not Las Vegas
How to learn them
Learn one region a day instead of all 50 at once. Print the region list, find each capital on the US map with capitals, and say each pair out loud: "Texas, Austin." Then cover the capitals and quiz each other.
When a whole region feels easy, try the full quiz. Write the ones you missed on a sticky note and practice just those the next day. For a map test, print the blank US map and mark each capital from memory.
