What is in the May packet

The packet has 16 math sheets, 16 reading sheets and 8 writing and fun sheets. The math is May in a 1st grade year: counting coins, a review of facts within 20, a review of tens and ones, and adding two-digit numbers to get ready for 2nd grade, with facts, missing numbers, number bonds, color by sum, story problems, skip counting and a picture graph to keep them going.

The reading is ild, ind, old and ost (wild, find, gold, most), compound words (rainbow, backpack) and a review of vowel teams and r-controlled vowels: words to read, split, cut and glue, three short stories, facts about bees, a sentence to build and the month's heart words to map. The writing sheets are fix the sentence, nouns and pronouns, summer plans, a how-to, a butterfly to decorate, bugs to label, a 1st grade memory and a spot-the-changes picture.

What level it is

The sheets follow the May weeks of our 1st grade plan, the last month of the year. The stories use only the spellings taught by then and the heart words of the year, so a child can read them without guessing. Adding two-digit numbers is done without regrouping, the way 2nd grade starts.

How to use it

Every sheet stands on its own, so use them in any order: morning work, a center, a sub folder, homework or the last weeks of school. A few are cut-and-glue sheets, which need scissors and a glue stick.

For more practice on one skill, see the 1st grade math worksheets, the phonics worksheets, the 1st grade spelling lists and the 1st grade reading passages. Younger children can start with the kindergarten May worksheets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the sheets print in black and white?
Yes. Every sheet is black and white. The coins are grey photographs of real coins, so they look right on a black and white printer. Coloring is something the child does.
Is there an answer key?
Yes, for every sheet that has one right answer. Each free PDF has its key on page 2. The packet has all the keys at the back, four to a page.
What do I get when I buy the packet?
One print-ready PDF with all 40 sheets, a contents page and the answer keys. The download link comes right after checkout and by email.
Can I use it with a whole class?
Yes. You may print and copy the pages for your own classroom or your own children.
