Frequently Asked Questions

How are the 1st grade spelling lists chosen?

Each week follows one phonics pattern, in the order 1st grade phonics is usually taught: short vowels and double letters, digraphs, blends, silent e, two-part words, soft c and g, vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, and word endings. Every word on a list, and every word in its sentences, uses only spellings taught by that week.

What are heart words?

Two words a week from the 1st grade sight word list. A heart word has a part that does not follow the rules a child knows yet, so that part is learned by heart. The word list marks them with a heart.

Why does the test have new words?

Two words on the Friday test are not on the list but use the same spelling pattern. If your child spells those, they have learned the pattern, not just memorized ten words.

How many words a week?

Eight in weeks 1 to 8 (six pattern words and two heart words) and ten from week 9 (eight and two), so the first weeks of 1st grade are not too much writing.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Every free PDF has its answer key on page 2, and the test comes with a read-aloud page for the grown-up that is also its key. The pack has every key at the back, four to a page.

What do I get when I buy the pack?

One print-ready PDF with all 36 weeks: the word list, word sort, sound boxes, fill in the blank, practice sheet, test and read-aloud page for every week, a four-page list of every week's test words and sentences, blank word list and test templates, and the answer keys, 287 pages in all. The download link comes right after checkout and by email.

More for 1st grade reading

The spelling patterns follow the same order as our decodable readers and phonics worksheets, so a week’s list matches what your child is reading. For heart words, see the sight word worksheets. Older children: 2nd grade spelling words.
