Central America is a narrow strip of land joining North and South America, with the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other. A chain of mountains and volcanoes runs down its length, closer to the Pacific side. Volcán Tajumulco in Guatemala is the highest point. Lowland rainforest covers much of the Caribbean coast. Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake, and at the narrow Isthmus of Panama the Panama Canal links the two oceans.
