The physical geography of Brazil

The Amazon Basin, a vast lowland of rainforest, covers the northern half of Brazil. South and east of it are the Brazilian Highlands, a region of plateaus and low mountains that fills most of the rest of the country and drops steeply to a narrow coastal plain. The Guiana Highlands rise along the northern border and include Pico da Neblina, the highest peak. The Pantanal, one of the world’s largest wetlands, lies in the west near Bolivia and Paraguay.

  • Paraná

The terrain is drawn from a global elevation model (Mapzen terrain tiles, built from NASA SRTM and other public surveys). Coastlines, rivers, lakes and feature names come from Natural Earth. The colors are spread over this country’s own elevation range, so its terrain shows clearly whether it is flat or mountainous.
