About the Vowel Teams Worksheets

A vowel team is two or three letters that spell one vowel sound: ai in rain, ee in sheep, oa in boat, igh in light. This level also brings in the r-controlled vowels (car, corn, bird) and the sliding sounds oi and ou (coin, cloud). These worksheets give a child a lot of those words to read and spell, in 9 kinds of sheet.

Every word a child has to read uses only the spellings taught so far, or a common sight word. The ten sets go in the order most phonics programs teach them: ai and ay; ee, ea and ey; oa and ow; igh and ie; oo, ew and ue; au and aw; ar and or; er, ir and ur; oi, oy, ou and ow; then silent letters (knee, wrist, lamb, phone) with a review. The wrong answers are look-alikes: train sits next to tray and trail, so the child has to read every letter.

The sheets climb in steps. A set starts with single words (Find the Word, Circle the Picture, Cut and Glue, Rhyme Jars), moves to whole sentences (Which Sentence?) and ends with tiny stories (Yes or No?, Read and Fill In). Which Spelling? is the sheet made for this level: a picture and its word with the vowel spelling left out, such as r__n. The child picks ai or ay and writes it in. On Sound Boxes a vowel team shares one box, because it is one sound.

The 6 ai and ay sheets on this page are free to print, each with its answer key, and the same 6 kinds are free for every other set on its phonics pages. All of the pictures are black and white line art, so a class set costs nothing extra to copy and the pictures can be colored in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a vowel team?
Two or three letters that work together to spell one vowel sound: ai in rain, ay in day, ee in sheep, ea in leaf, oa in boat, igh in light, oo in moon. Some teams spell a long vowel and some, like oi in coin and ou in cloud, spell a sound of their own.
What grade are these for?
The second half of 1st grade and 2nd grade. They suit a child who reads silent e words and is ready for the other ways to spell long vowels.
What order should I use them in?
The long vowel teams first (ai and ay, then ee and ea, oa and ow, igh and ie), then oo, ew and ue, then au and aw, then the r-controlled sets (ar and or, then er, ir and ur), then oi, oy, ou and ow. The silent letters and review set comes last. Inside a set, the single-word sheets come before the sentence and story sheets.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Each free PDF has its answer key as the second page. The pack has a key for every sheet, printed four to a page at the back.
Do they print in black and white?
Yes. Every worksheet is black and white line art. Only the cover of the pack is in color.
What comes before and after these?
Before: the silent e worksheets, for the first long vowel spelling. After: reading these words in books. The Level 4 decodable readers are short illustrated books written with the same vowel teams and r-controlled words.
