A word and three pictures

Add e to cap, read cape, circle its picture

Cut out the words, glue each by its picture

A tiny story, then six sentences to judge

A story with four words to fill in

A box for each sound, and the silent e in its own
A silent e at the end of a word makes the vowel before it say its name: cap becomes cape, kit becomes kite, rob becomes robe, tub becomes tube. It is the first long vowel spelling most children learn, and these worksheets give a child a lot of those words to read, in 9 kinds of sheet.
Every word a child has to read uses only the spellings taught so far, or a first sight word. The sets go in the order most phonics programs teach them: a_e, i_e, o_e and u_e, then a set that mixes short and long vowels. After that come the other spellings of the same level: soft c and g (mice, cage), y as a vowel (fly, bunny), and the all, old and ind words (ball, gold, find). The wrong answers are look-alikes: cape sits next to cap and cave, so the child has to read every letter.
The sheets climb in steps. A set starts with single words (Find the Word, Circle the Picture, Cut and Glue, Rhyme Jars), moves to whole sentences (Which Sentence?) and ends with tiny stories (Yes or No?, Read and Fill In). Add the E is the sheet made for this level: the child adds e to a short vowel word, reads the new word and circles its picture. On Sound Boxes the silent e sits in a dashed box of its own, because it makes no sound.
The 6 long a sheets on this page are free to print, each with its answer key, and the same 6 kinds are free for every other set on its phonics pages. All of the pictures are black and white line art, so a class set costs nothing extra to copy and the pictures can be colored in.
