A digraph is two letters that make one sound: sh in ship, ch in chop, th in bath, ck in duck. A blend is two consonants said one after the other: fl in flag, fr in frog, st in stop. They are the next step after three-letter words, and these worksheets give a child a lot of them to read, in 8 kinds of sheet.
Every word a child has to read is a short vowel word that uses only the sounds taught so far, or a first sight word. The sets go in the order most phonics programs teach them, so the sh sheets never ask for a ch word and the blends wait until the digraphs are done. The wrong answers are look-alikes: ship sits next to shop and sip, so the child has to read every letter.
The sheets climb in steps. A set starts with single words (Find the Word, Circle the Picture, Cut and Glue, Rhyme Jars), moves to whole sentences (Which Sentence?) and ends with tiny stories (Yes or No?, Read and Fill In). Sound Boxes is the spelling sheet: one box for each sound, so sh shares a box and fl takes two.
The 6 sh sheets on this page are free to print, each with its answer key, and the same 6 kinds are free for every other sound and blend on its phonics pages. All of the pictures are black and white line art, so a class set costs nothing extra to copy and the pictures can be colored in.
