After school, Kim ran out to the back deck with her little chef doll. The chef had a white hat and a thick black mustache. "Today you are going to jump," Kim told him. "But first you must have a parachute."
Kim cut a small bit of cloth and taped it to the chef's back. She stood on the top step and held him out. "One, two, three!" she said, and she let go. The chef fell fast. Plop! He landed in the mud. Kim's stomach dropped. She ran down the steps and picked him up. Mud stuck to his mustache and dripped off his hat.
Kim wiped him clean and sat down to think. Why did he fall so fast? She looked at the wet little cloth in her hand. "This chute is much too small to hold you up," she said. Then Kim had a new plan.
She ran in and came back with a huge white cloth. It was so big that she could hide under it. She used lots of tape to stick it to the chef's back.
Kim stood on the top step again and let go. This time the big cloth puffed up like a kite. The chef glided down and landed safe on the grass. Kim clapped and jumped down the steps. "You did it, you brave little chef!" she said. "Do you want to go again?"
