1Liv had a long piece of rope and a big plan. She tied one end to a pine at the side of the field.

2Then she tied the other end to a pine on the far side. "I will walk on this rope over the grass," she said. Liv stepped up on the rope.

3But the rope sagged under her, and she dropped into the grass with a plop. She brushed off her legs and tried again. Plop! She fell once more.
Liv Walks the Rope, page 4
4"I will not give up on this rope!" she cried. Five more times she tried, and five more times she fell. At last she sat in the grass and felt glum.
Liv Walks the Rope, page 5
5Just then, Tess came up the path with a plum pie for lunch. "Why are you so glum?" she asked. "The rope sags each time I step on it," said Liv. Tess set down her pie.
Liv Walks the Rope, page 6
6"I am big. Let me help," she said. She wrapped her trunk around the end of the rope and gave it a huge tug. Then she held it still as Liv tied it to the pine again.
Liv Walks the Rope, page 7
7Liv stepped up on the rope. This time it did not sag. At first she stood still. Then, step by step, she walked the whole way over to the far pine.
Liv Walks the Rope, page 8
8"I did it!" she yelled. "What a relief!" they cried. Then the two pals sat under the pines and ate the plum pie together.
