Luke and Rex at Sunset

Level 5 Review 3rd Phase 5
Luke and Rex at Sunset

Luke had a little rabbit named Rex. Rex was a very happy pet who loved to explore. Today, Luke wanted to take Rex to the tallest hill behind his home. He wanted to watch the sunset from the very top. "It will be a grand trip," Luke said to Rex. The rabbit tapped his foot in a quick, excited motion.

Luke got his green backpack, which had a big tiger printed on the pocket. Inside the backpack, he packed a sweet red apple for himself and some fresh green plants for Rex. He wrapped the apple in a white paper napkin to keep it clean. Rex stood on his back legs, sniffing the bag. "We are ready," Luke said, smiling at his helpful friend.

They walked out to the backyard. To get to the hill, they had to go through the tall wooden gate. Luke reached into his pocket to find the key to unlock the latch. But he made a big mistake. As he pulled his hand out, the key slipped from his fingers. It fell down, down, down into the thick, dark grass.

Luke got down on the ground to search. He patted the damp dirt and pushed the grass away, but he could not see the key. The yard was getting darker, and the hill looked bigger and taller than before. "Oh no," Luke whispered. "I cannot find it. This is hopeless!" He felt sad that they might miss the sunset. He knew he had to redo his search and look even closer.

Just then, Rex went into action. The rabbit began jumping up and down by a small patch of grass. Rex made a digging motion with his tiny soft paws. Luke watched his pet and was surprised. He reached into the grass where Rex was digging. His fingers hit something cold and hard. It was the key! "Good job, Rex!" Luke yelled.

Luke quickly used the key to unlock the gate. It fell open with a soft sound. Together, the boy and his hopping rabbit went up the path. They reached the top of the tallest hill just in time. The sky was filled with red and gold light. Luke sat on his backpack, eating his apple, while Rex ate his greens. Luke was glad he had such a helpful friend.
