About color by sight word

A color by sight word sheet is word reading practice with a reason to keep going. The page is a grid of squares with a sight word in each one. The crayon boxes at the top list which words go with which color, so the child has to read every word before coloring its square. The picture is not printed anywhere on the sheet: it shows up as the squares fill in.

The sheets check themselves. A misread word puts the wrong color in the picture, and a stray square stands out, so children often go back and read the word again on their own. That second look is the practice.

The words come from the Dolch sight word lists, split in two so each sheet has 20 to 26 words: the pre-primer list for preschool and kindergarten, the primer list for kindergarten and the first grade list. Color words such as red and blue always go with their own crayon, so a child who reads "blue" colors the square blue. Each sheet has 120 squares, so every word comes up several times.

A full picture takes most young children 20 to 40 minutes, so it can be split over two days. They suit early finishers, a literacy center, a substitute plan or homework. To teach the words first, see the sight word worksheets and the flashcards and word lists. For the math version, see color by math facts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does color by sight word work?
Every square has a sight word. The child reads the word, finds it in one of the crayon boxes at the top of the page and colors the square that color. When every square is colored, a picture appears.
Which sight words are on the sheets?
The Dolch lists: pre-primer (40 words), primer and first grade, each split over two sheets in alphabetical order. The primer sheets leave out "white", since there is no white crayon. Every word on a list is on its sheet.
Do I need a color printer?
No. The sheets print in black and white. The child needs crayons in the colors named at the top, six at most. Only the answer key is in color, and it has the word in every square too.
Does the sheet give the picture away?
No. The printed sheet only names the word list. The finished pictures are shown on this page so you can choose one.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Page 2 of every PDF shows the finished picture with the word in each square.
