Frequently Asked Questions

What are the time zones in the United States?

The contiguous United States spans four time zones: Pacific (UTC-8), Mountain (UTC-7), Central (UTC-6), and Eastern (UTC-5). Two more cover the rest of the country — Alaska Time (UTC-9) and Hawaii-Aleutian Time (UTC-10). Offsets shift by one hour during daylight saving time.

Which states are split between two time zones?

About a dozen states straddle a time-zone line. Tennessee and Kentucky are split Central/Eastern; Indiana and Michigan are mostly Eastern with a few Central counties; Florida's western panhandle is Central. On the Central/Mountain line, far-western Texas (El Paso), Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota include Mountain-zone areas. On the Mountain/Pacific line, northern Idaho and far-eastern Oregon differ from the rest of their state. This map colors each state by the zone covering most of its population.

Why doesn't Arizona change its clocks?

Most of Arizona is on Mountain Standard Time year-round and does not observe daylight saving time, so in summer its clocks match Pacific Time. (The Navajo Nation within Arizona does observe DST.) Hawaii also does not use daylight saving time.

Is this time zone map free to print?

Yes — download the print-quality version and print as many copies as you need for your classroom or homeschool, completely free.
