The physical geography of South Korea

About 70 percent of South Korea is mountains and hills. The Taebaek Mountains run down the east coast and form the backbone of the Korean Peninsula, with the Sobaek Mountains branching off to the southwest. The widest plains are in the west and south, along the Yellow Sea, where most of the rivers flow. The south and west coasts are broken into thousands of small islands. Jeju, the largest island, is a volcano whose summit, Hallasan, is the country’s highest point.

The terrain is drawn from a global elevation model (Mapzen terrain tiles, built from NASA SRTM and other public surveys). Coastlines, rivers, lakes and feature names come from Natural Earth. The colors are spread over this country’s own elevation range, so its terrain shows clearly whether it is flat or mountainous.
