Tips for drawing with kids

  1. Pencil firstDraw lightly with a pencil, then go over the lines you like with a marker or a dark crayon and erase the rest.
  2. Say it as you drawRead each step out loud, draw it, then look at the picture again before the next one.
  3. Fill the spaceYoung children draw small. Show where the first shape goes so the turkey fills the box.
  4. Wobbly is fineEvery turkey looks different, and a wobbly turkey is still a turkey. Praise the try, then color it in.

About this turkey drawing

A turkey is two circles and a fan. Draw the head and body first, then add the tail feathers behind them, one pair at a time from the top down, so the fan comes out even on both sides. Each feather is a long rounded loop that tucks in behind the one before it.

Color each feather a different fall color, or trace your hand for the feathers instead. For more Thanksgiving printables, see the seasonal page. For another easy bird, try how to draw a bird.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you draw a turkey step by step?

Draw the eyes, beak and wattle, then a round head around them. Add two wings and a round body below, then two thin legs with three toes. Finish with a fan of rounded tail feathers behind the body, one pair at a time.

What is the red thing on a turkey?

It is called a wattle: a flap of red skin that hangs down by the beak. Drawing it is what makes a turkey look like a turkey and not another bird.

Is this good for Thanksgiving?

Yes. Kids can draw the turkey, color the feathers and write what they are thankful for on the draw and write sheet.

What age is this for?

Ages 4 to 8.

How do I print the sheets?

Each card downloads a PDF. Print it on US Letter paper at 100 percent (actual size). The sheets are black and white, so they print well on any printer.
