Periodic Table Quiz

118 elements. We name one, you click its square on the table. Three tries each. On a phone, zoom in with the + button.

How to play

Press Start. The name of an element shows at the top: click its square. Each square shows the atomic number and symbol, so the quiz teaches the symbols as you go. Right on the first try turns it green; right after a miss turns it amber; after three misses it turns red and the quiz moves on. New to the table? Start with the first 20 elements.

Print the periodic table (colour or black and white, with names) to study, and the blank table on the same page to test yourself on paper.

Teaching this topic?

The Periodic Table teaching pack has everything for the lesson: lesson slides, guided notes and 9 printables with every answer key (grades 6 to 8), $7. Use this game as the warm-up or the review.

Questions

Why do some symbols not match the name?

Some symbols come from the element's Latin name: Na for sodium (natrium), K for potassium (kalium), Fe for iron (ferrum), Ag for silver (argentum), Au for gold (aurum), Pb for lead (plumbum) and Hg for mercury (hydrargyrum).

Where do the two bottom rows go?

The lanthanides (57 to 71) and actinides (89 to 103) belong in periods 6 and 7. They are printed below the table so it fits on a page.

Can my class use this?
