About the Sight Word Worksheets

These sight word worksheets teach 102 high-frequency words one at a time, in a fixed order. Every word has two pages. On the Read It page the child reads five short sentences that use the new word, then colors a star for each read-through. On the Write It page the child colors the word, traces it, writes it, finds it among look-alike words and finishes a sentence with it.

Each new page uses only words from earlier pages, the new word, and short words a child can sound out, such as cat, mud and hid. Where a sentence needs a word the child cannot read yet, a picture stands in for it. That is why the first pages read "I can" followed by a picture of a child kicking a ball: the child reads real sentences from the first day, with two words.

The words come in sets of six. Each set ends with Roll and Read, a one-page game for one die and some crayons that mixes the set's six words. A set is one 13-page PDF, so a week of sight word work is one print job.

The first 4 sets (24 words) are free to print here. Every page is black and white line art, so a class set costs nothing extra to copy and the pictures can be colored in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sight words are included?
102 common high-frequency words from the Dolch and Fry lists, starting with I, can, a, see, the and like, and ending with could and would. The full list, set by set, is on this page.
What order should I teach them in?
In the order of the sets. Each page is written with only the words that came before it, so a child who has done sets 1 to 3 can read every sentence in set 4. Skipping ahead means meeting words that have not been taught.
What grade are these for?
Kindergarten and the start of 1st grade. The early sets suit a child who knows letter sounds and is starting to read; the later sets have full sentences with speech marks and small stories.
Why are there pictures inside the sentences?
A picture stands in for a word the child cannot read yet, so the early pages can still be real sentences. Pictures of an action, such as hop or kick, have the word in small print underneath for the adult. As more words are taught, the pictures move to the end of the row and the sentences are all print.
Do they print in black and white?
Yes. Every worksheet is black and white line art.
How is this different from the sight word flashcards?
The sight words page has the full Dolch and Fry lists and flashcards. These worksheets teach the words in sentences, one new word per page, with writing practice.
