About Times Table Munch
Times Table Munch is a free times tables game for 2nd to 4th grade. A garden of 30 numbers fills the screen, and the rule at the top says which ones to eat: the multiples of 6, say, or the answer to 7 × 8. Your child walks the goat to a number and presses Munch to eat it. The right numbers are eaten, a wrong one costs a heart, and a bee, a crow or a weasel wanders the garden to get in the way. Clear every right number to finish the level.
How it teaches
Moving and eating are two separate actions. Walking to a square never answers anything, so a child can dodge, change their mind or stop to think. Only the Munch button is a maths decision.
Times tables fluency means fast and right, so the game is played against a gentle clock: the enemy keeps moving. The early levels are slow and forgiving, and the enemies never take answers away. Every right number on the board is the child's to find.
A wrong munch is explained, not just marked: the game shows the times table the number is not in (12 is not in the 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20…) or the right answer to the fact.
Every right munch shows the fact it stands for, such as 6 × 7 = 42, so the multiples connect back to multiplication.
Each board is new every time: about a third of the squares are right, and the rest are close calls (a number or two off, or from a nearby table), so guessing doesn't pay.
The 12 levels
Bee Meadow (levels 1 to 3): the multiples of 2, 5 and 10. The bee wanders at random.
Crow Orchard (levels 4 to 6): the multiples of 3 and 4, then mixed facts from the 2s to the 5s, one fact at a time. The crow hangs around the answers near the goat.
Weasel Woods (levels 7 to 12): the multiples of 6, 7, 8 and 9, then mixed facts from the 6s to the 9s and a last level of the tricky ones. The weasel follows the goat, slowly.
Every level is open, so a child can start with the table they are learning.
For parents and teachers
It runs in the browser on tablets, phones, Chromebooks and computers. On a computer the arrow keys move and the space bar munches.
