How to Teach Kids to Read Big Words

The one move that unlocks big words: find the vowels
Every syllable has exactly one vowel sound. So the fastest way to break a word into syllables is to hunt for the vowels first, then split between them. Teach your child this three-step routine and use it on real words from whatever they're reading:
- Spot the vowels. Underline or tap every vowel that's making a sound (napkin → a … i). Two vowel sounds means two syllables.
- Split between them. When two consonants sit between the vowels, cut between the consonants: nap / kin. When only one consonant sits between them, try cutting before it first: ro / bot.
- Read each chunk, then blend. nap … kin … napkin. Small, decodable pieces your child already knows how to read.
Teachers call step 2 syllable division, and the two patterns above have names worth knowing: the VC/CV split (two consonants in the middle, as in nap-kin) and the V/CV split (one consonant, as in ro-bot). The first time your child chunks fantastic, it's slow and effortful. That's normal, and it's not the finish line.
